 Rose Macro Oils, 18x24, 2007

Here I've completed the underpainting for the rose. I've colored in the base colors and begun to define the lights and darks.
The background is a mix of french ultramarine, terre verte, burnt umber, and black. The rose itself is a mix of alizarin crimson and cadmium red, with titanium white added where needed. I've also defined the cool areas of the flower with payne's grey.

Here, I've started to go over the underlayer with a more defined shade, closer to what the final painting should look like. I've mainly worked on defining the inner petals.
I've also glazed a yellow tint over parts of the flower. It won't look quite as yellow in the final painting, but the effect should show through.

Here, I've started to define the edges and curls of the rose petals. I'm also continuing to darken the shaded areas as needed.

This is the final image. I've cleaned up all of the edges and boosted the contrasts. I also added another coat of paint to the background color.
